ROCKY MOUNT -- Amid a political storm that now includes threatening phone calls, U.S. Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. reiterated yesterday that he will not apologize for a letter he wrote that laments the influx of Muslims to America and the use of the Quran in Congress.

In a news conference at the Franklin County courthouse where a contingent of deputies guarded the doors, Goode, R-5th, told reporters that he will not back down from the views he expressed in the letter, which include his fear that one day "many more Muslims" may be "elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran [an alternate spelling]."

On Tuesday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations called for Goode to apologize, and since then other Islamic groups have sought an apology.

"I do not apologize, and I do not retract my letter," Goode said in a rising voice.

Poppy Bush breaks down in tears as he praises demon son #2

Praising son Jeb, former President Bush breaks down

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- Former President George H.W. Bush broke down in tears as he cited his son, Gov. Jeb Bush, as an example of leadership.
Bush was addressing lawmakers, his son's top administrators, and state workers gathered in the House chamber Monday for the last of the governor's leadership forums.

He said he was proud of how his son handled losing the 1994 governor's race to popular incumbent Democrat Lawton Chiles and vaguely referred to dirty tricks in the campaign.

"He didn't whine about it. He didn't complain," the former president said before choking up. As he tried to continue, he let out a sob and put a handkerchief to his face. When he spoke again, his words were broken up by pauses as he tried to regain composure.

"A true measure of a man is how you handle victory and how you handle defeat, so in '94 Floridians chose to rehire the governor. They took note of his worthy opponent, who showed with not only words but with actions what decency he had," Bush said before again sobbing.

After his defeat, Jeb Bush formed a group called Foundation for Florida's Future which promoted education policy. He also helped open a charter school in a poor Miami neighborhood, helped the state Republican Party organize a convention and straw poll to have sway in the 1996 presidential election and lobbied for education and campaign finance reform bills. Bush won the first of his two terms in 1998.

Flatulence, not turbulence forces plane landing in Nashville
By Samuel Shu, The Tennessean
Last Updated: 12/5/2006 3:07:10 PM

Flatulence brought 99 passengers on an American Airlines flight to an unscheduled visit to Nashville early Monday morning.

American Flight 1053, from Washington Reagan National Airport and bound for Dallas/Fort Worth, made an emergency landing here after passengers reported smelling struck matches, said Lynne Lowrance, a spokeswoman for the Nashville International Airport Authority.

The plane landed safely. The FBI, Transportation Safety Administration and airport authority responded to the emergency, Lowrance said.

The passengers and five crew members were brought off the plane, together with all the luggage, to go through security checks again. Bomb-sniffing dogs found spent matches.

White Cop Has Black Men Rap to Avoid Ticket

White Cop Has Black Men Rap to Avoid Ticket

A Video That Shows a White Police Officer Telling Two African American Men to Rap Is Causing Controversy

Dec. 3, 2006 — - An investigation is underway in Tempe, Ariz., after a police officer told two African American men they could avoid getting a ticket if they performed a rap for him.

The incident was played out on a reality show produced by the local police force. It was supposed to highlight the department's philosophy of community policing, but has instead sparked controversy.

In the clip, an officer pulls over two African American men on charges of littering. He offers them a way out of the ticket, saying, "No littering ticket if the two of you just do a little rap."

The men, neither of whom are actors, agree. One of them rhymes, "The dangers of littering you will get a ticket. If you ain't with it, you better be experienced."

Anti-muslim bigotry exposed by radio host

In U.S., fear and distrust of Muslims runs deep

WASHINGTON (Reuters)- When radio host Jerry Klein suggested that all Muslims in the United States should be identified with a crescent-shape tattoo or a distinctive arm band, the phone lines jammed instantly.

The first caller to the station in Washington said that Klein must be "off his rocker." The second congratulated him and added: "Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship them out of this country ... they are here to kill us."

Another said that tattoos, armbands and other identifying markers such as crescent marks on driver's licenses, passports and birth certificates did not go far enough. "What good is identifying them?" he asked. "You have to set up encampments like during World War Two with the Japanese and Germans."

At the end of the one-hour show, rich with arguments on why visual identification of "the threat in our midst" would alleviate the public's fears, Klein revealed that he had staged a hoax. It drew out reactions that are not uncommon in post-9/11 America.
